Whooping Cough Outbreak Noted in Wright County

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough is on the rise once again in Wright County, as well as other parts of the state. Wright County Public Health reports that 77 confirmed cases have been reported since the beginning of the year. Officials say most of the diagnosed cases are in school age children, but adults and children as young as 4 months have also become ill. Pertussis is caused by bacteria that spread from person to person through coughing or sneezing. Droplets are produced in the air, but don't travel far. Officials say usually they only infect persons nearby. Symptoms often start out mild, and are similar to a cold, such as sneezing, cough, runny nose, and sometimes a low-grade fever. The cough tends to be worse at night, and over time can become severe, lasting weeks or even months. Pertussis, or whooping cough can be very serious for youngsters, and in some cases can be fatal. Public Health officials say anyone who develops a cough illness after direct exposure to someone who has pertussis, or anyone who has a persistent cough of unknown origin that lasts more than 7 days, or a violent cough that occurs with a whooping sound, accompanied by vomiting or gagging while coughing, or the inability to catch one's breath while coughing should be checked for pertussis. A 5-day course of antibiotics is usually prescribed for persons confirmed to have pertussis. Though the treatment doesn't necessarily help the cough go away faster, it does help to prevent the spread of this very contagious disease. Booster vaccines of Tdap, or tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis are available from the Wellness on Wheels, or WOW van, or of course, from your physician. For more on pertussis, log onto the Minnesota Department of Health website at; www.health.state.mn.us.

May Observed as Mental Health Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Sue Abderholden with The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Minnesota says with proper treatment and support most people can recover from mental illness. She says mental illnesses are medical conditions that can disrupt a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning, and she says they're much more common than most people would think. Abderholden says unfortunately, there's still too many people that rush to blame or shame people whose lives are affected by mental illness. For more information on mental illness you can contact The National Alliance on Mental Illness, or NAMI. Abderholden says they offer a number of resources including free educational classes and support groups. To visit the group's website, log onto; www.nami.org.
